It's been a few weeks since the last installment of our "Habits Of Fit Surfers" so it's time for a quick refresher...
Habit #1 - Fit surfers do functional strength training workouts 2-3 times per week
Habit #2 - Fit surfers keep their muscles loose by doing foam rolling on a regular basis

Habits Of Fit Surfers #3
Fit surfers incorporate exercises to improve their overall stability
When I talk about stability, I'm not just talking about core stability (although it does include that) and I'm not just talking about balance (although it does include that as well).
What I mean is stability throughout your whole body at every joint.
Surfing involves being on an unstable surface at all times (water) and so that makes it even more important to have a stable body so you can control your movements more effectively.
So how do you train for stability?
Here are a few suggestions...
- Do more single leg or single arm exercises
(Single Leg Deadlifts, Single Arm Swiss Ball Chest Press) - Perform exercises using a swiss ball, BOSU, balance board or suspension trainer
(Swiss Ball Side Plank, Balance Board Squats,Single Arm TRX Rows) - Do more complex variations of exercises
(Split Squat Jumps, Band Power Chops, Side to Side Pull-ups)
Does every exercise need to train stability?
No, you should still have a balance of strength based exercises and stability based exercises. However most exercises will train a combination of both anyway.
Are you training for stability? If not, it's time to get incorporate some stability exercises into yoursurf fitness workouts.
Fitness should be a lifestyle, so keep building those habits. Imagine the difference 12 months from now if you can incorporate even just a few of these habits into your routine.
